Ericsson and China Mobile Hong Kong perform first TD-LTE handover in Live FDD Network
Seamless bidirectional handover between LTE FDD/TDD, performed in China Mobile Hong Kong’s live LTE network, on a commercial chipset from Altair Semiconductor
HONG KONG – June 20, 2012 – Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) performed bidirectional LTE FDD/TDD handover live in China Mobile Hong Kong’s network on a commercial chipset from Altair Semiconductor, providing a seamless end-user experience in a converged LTE FDD/TDD network. This was the first LTE FDD/TDD handover in a live network.
Interworking between LTE FDD/TDD in networks will be of increasing importance for operators that have spectrum for both LTE modes. It will allow operators to seamlessly offer Mobile Broadband services on FDD and TDD spectrum, increasing capacity and improving consumer experience.
China Mobile Hong Kong’s LTE network is provided by Ericsson and currently uses the FDD mode. As the handover demonstrates, Ericsson can offer operators a fully integrated FDD/TDD network that, from a systems point of view, is as simple as handover between a system running two frequencies. With this achievement, Ericsson continues to demonstrate technology leadership within the area of mobile broadband and LTE (FDD/TDD).
Mats H Olsson, President Region China & North East Asia, says: “Ericsson is dedicated to ensuring the success of converged LTE FDD/TDD for operators, so that they can make the most of their spectrum investments and provide the best quality service for their customers. Seamless handover and a well-functioning LTE ecosystem are both essential to that end. Ericsson’s collaboration with Altair is helping to drive the ecosystem.”
Ericsson and Altair have a collaboration for LTE (FDD/TDD) focusing on interoperability design testing (IODT) of LTE technologies. This collaboration helps to drive the development of truly non-proprietary industry solutions, which allow new technologies to be widely deployed.
”We appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate the native and seamless support of LTE FDD/TDD in our chipset,” said Eran Eshed, Co-Founder and Vice President of Marketing at Altair. “Altair is committed to driving the commercialization of LTE FDD/TDD devices together with our global OEM/ODM partner network.”
