CHICAGO – October 2, 2008 – xchange magazine announced today that Altair Semiconductor, a fabless chip company developing the world’s most advanced 4G mobile semiconductors for handheld devices, has been selected to receive the Best of WIMAX World Award for its ALT2150 mobile WiMAX baseband processor in the “Chip Design” category. The annual awards recognize leaders in the development and deployment of WiMAX technologies. Nominations were open to exhibitors, sponsors and speakers of WiMAX World USA Conference and Expo, Sept. 30 – Oct. 2 in Chicago, and selected by a judging panel of experts from the WiMAX community.
Altair’s ALT2150 received the “Chip Design” award on Oct. 1 at a ceremony following the close of the WiMAX World exhibition floor. Awards were presented to recipients in six categories. Altair and their award will be featured in the December issue of xchange, as well as on the WiMAX World and xchange Web sites.
“xchange is pleased to honor Altair’s contributions to the development and promotion of WiMAX technology and services,” said Mike Saxby, group publisher of xchange. “The growth in the industry has been tremendous, as shown by Altair’s achievement.”
“On behalf of WiMAX World, I congratulate Altair for winning this year’s WiMAX World USA Award in Chip Design,” added Eliot Weinman, conference founder and co-chair, and president of Trendsmedia. “WiMAX World Awards winners truly represent the best and the brightest WiMAX technology, services and network implementations in the world.”
Altair’s ALT2150, the world’s smallest and most power-efficient mobile WiMAX processor, implements full WiMAX Forum™ Wave-2 physical (PHY) Layer and Media Access Control (MAC) functionality, and offers substantial performance enhancements beyond this profile. The ALT2150 is the first in a family of chipsets from Altair crafted to achieve excellent modem performance, while consuming a fraction of the power of any mobile WiMAX chipset available today.
“Less than six months after releasing the ALT2150, the chip is considered an industry benchmark for mobile, handheld devices, and is integrated in some of the world’s leading device and module manufacturers’ products,” said Eran Eshed, Co-founder and VP of Marketing and Business Development for Altair. “The ALT2150’s represents a true disruption in terms of power consumption, size and cost, and this award is a tremendous validation of our technology.”
The WiMAX award winners were selected by an independent judging panel that consisted of Craig Mathias, principal, Farpoint Group; Will Strauss, principal analyst, Forward Concepts; Adlane Fellah, CEO and founder, Maravedis Inc.; Caroline Gabriel, lead research analyst, Rethink Research; Philip Marshall, vice president of enabling technologies,Yankee Group; and representatives from xchange and Trendsmedia.
