Whale Communications Works with Microsoft Exchange to Secure Web-based Email Access

FORT LEE, NJ, September 25, 2001 – Whale Communications┬«, leader in Air Gap technology, today announced that it is working with Microsoft Exchange to provide secure web-based email access.

Business travelers do not always have access to their full corporate network while on the road, but an Internet-connected web browser is usually on hand – for example, at a hotel business center or airport.

However, checking email and other collaborative applications from a public Internet station can open up serious confidentiality and security risks – intolerable to many organizations. Whale’s e-Gap Webmail System, used with Microsoft’s Outlook Web Access (OWA) for Exchange, includes several unique features specifically designed to mitigate risks of accessing confidential information from a public, unsecured location.

“By implementing e-Gap Webmail, road warriors can now securely access their e-mail, calendar, tasks and collaborative information on their Microsoft Exchange Server from public locations. Even if a hacker is looking over their shoulder or knows the user’s username, this information is useless,” said David H. Schwartz, Whale’s Director of Business Planning.

The e-Gap Webmail reduces these risks through its patent-pending Secure Logoff and Air Gap technologies, which enable enterprises to provide access from the Internet to core back-end applications, without opening a hole in the corporate firewall; the same Air Gap technology is securing the e-Business applications and networks of enterprises worldwide. System also overlays strong authentication, encryption and authorization. In addition, because installation does not require Exchange reconfigurations, the System can be implemented quickly and seamlessly. It is also viewed as a cost effective and convenient alternative to VPNs, as there is no dedicated client software.

Another result of Whale’s strategic relationship with Microsoft is that an enterprise’s risk of exposing its back-office to intruders while employees are allowed remote access to their email is largely offset. The e-Gap System’s multi-layer protection, complementing OWA’s built-in security, protects the confidentiality of the actual email and the organization’s core information.

“We are happy to be working with Whale Communications in delivering our Exchange customers a new security solution for accessing their web-based email,” said Kevin McCuistion, Exchange Group Product Manager at Microsoft Corp. “Integrating the e-Gap Webmail System and OWA provides a secure solution to meet the needs of our mutual customers so they can benefit from the rich functionality of Exchange, no matter where they are working.”

Whale will exhibit its e-Gap Webmail at the Microsoft Exchange Conference (MEC), booth 363, in Orlando. The conference is held from September 30 to October 3.
